very confused with syntax error

Hello,

I have a SunOS 5.9 operating system running on a Dell Dimension 4100.
I am trying to install MySQL, but when I invoke scripts/mysql_install_db --user=mysql as one of the first steps I get the following.
./bin/my_print_defaults: syntax error at line 2: ^A unexpected
Neither hose 'my host' and 'localhost' could not be looked up with ./bin/resolveip
Please configure the 'hostname' command to return a correct hostname....

If I just do shell>my_print_defaults
my_print_defaults: syntax error at line 2: ^A unexpected.

I'm logged in as root on this machine.
Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.
