OSX 10.3.5 mysql data directory?

Okay guys, please bare with me as I am a complete novice.

I am studying multimedia and have just begun learning mysql. At my school I use a pc, but at home I use a mac. Here is my problem:

At my school I can simply open the mysql data folder and my databases are right there for me to see. When I write my databases from the DOS command line, I can then open the folder and they are there.

It is a totally different story, it seems, on my mac. I installed mysql 4.1.7 which installs to /usr/local/mysql. I can access the folder from a command line, but when I try to manually find the folder I can not find anything. I cant find the usr diretory, the local directory, or the mysql directory. Everything appears to be hidden, or else I am doing something drastically wrong here.

Is there any way to access the data folder without using the command line? I have scoured the internet for several hours and I have found nothing that helps me. Can someone please give me some ideas?
