php query seems to connect to the dattabase but cannot retrieve the values from the table

i have migrated database using export from mysql Version information: 3.2.0.1 to MySQL server version: 5.0.92 .
in the previous version, my database seemed to work just fine. but in the newer one it can connect to the database but on execution of the query, it returns zero. i have verified and run the query on the earlier database and it works perfectly but dosent work here
please help.
