mysqld statup fails on Debian

I'm having problems trying to start mysqld on my Debian virtual machine. The mysqld version is 5.1.61-0. My console output and all I see in mysql.log is:

Starting MySQL database server: mysqld . . . . . . . . . . . . . . failed!
root@debian:~# cat /var/log/mysql/mysql.log
/usr/sbin/mysqld, Version: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1-log ((Debian)). started with:
Tcp port: 3306 Unix socket: /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
Time Id Command Argument
/usr/sbin/mysqld, Version: 5.1.61-0+squeeze1-log ((Debian)). started with:
