Could not start the MySQL service on local computer error 1067: the process terminated unexpectedly

Hello,

We have an existing install of MySQL Server 5 on a Windows Server 2003 server.
The MySQL service is configured to start automatically and to be restarted if it stops. With the exception of one hiccough about 6 weeks ago the service has been starting and running properly.

Last night I installed critical updates and rebooted the server. This morning I realized that the MySQL service was not running. I attempted to start it. It appeared to start. However, just a few seconds later it was not running. Attempted to start it again. Same thing...

Rebooted server. Service did not start. Now, following that reboot, I get

"Could not start the MySQL service on local computer.
Error 1067: the process terminated unexpectedly"

every time I click on start.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

While MySQL Server 5 has been running on the server for quite some time I am, nonetheless, a newbie.

Thanks,
Katie
