mysql replication

This is a two part question. First, can mysql replication work between two servers with different operating systems. for example, linux and windows. Second, is there a way to resync the master and slave if they loose connection and the slave data is changed? I ask this second question because I am intersted in setting up the slave at my remote office and use it as a backup if I loose my internet connection. This way my remote office will still be able to function. Though the slave will be recieving updates and would need to send its changes back to the master when the connection is restored.
