User "root" cannot change some system variables?

Hello,

I am new to MySQL. I installed 8.0.27 on my Mac running OS X 12.0.1 a few weeks ago. For right now, I am logged in as root, while I create and delete schemas and tables frequently and learn the system. I tried to change a system variable and got this message:

"You need (at least one of) the SUPER or SYSTEM_VARIABLES_ADMIN privilege(s) for this operation."

I looked at root's Admin Roles, and everything is checked. This user is SUPER, although "Schema Privileges" is blank. What am I doing wrong, that "root" is unable to do something?

Regards,
Karl
