Unable to connect...pls help

I tried to connect to MySQL server using the following line:
mysql -h localhost
but got this error msg instead:
ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' <10061>
I've no idea what's wrong with it. Can any1 help? Thanks in advance
