multiple theads locking mysql

We have been using MySQL for about 2 years with no problem, but recently we have had to restart it almost daily. It seems like at certain times many proceses are started that are not needed and mysql locks up. Has anyone else ever had this type of problem? I am going to isamchk the tables to see if there are problems, but any other suggestions would be appreciated.
