ERROR 1006 (HY000): Can't create database XXX (errno: 2)

Just installed 5.0.67 into Mac OS 10.5. Even when logged in to mysql as root, I am unable to create a new database. Typing "CREATE DATABASE xxx;" in to the terminal returns "ERROR 1006 (HY000): Can't create database XXX (errno: 2)." Searching this forum and the web in general turns up no useful information, especially with regards to the "(errno: 2)" portion of the error. I have seen not one person ask about this specific error combination (1006 where the errno is 2).
It also might be significant to mention that I installed MySQL using Dan Benjamin's instructions over at Hivelogic (using 5.0.67 as opposed to 5.0.45):
http://hivelogic.com/articles/2007/11/installing-mysql-on-mac-os-x.
Any help with troubleshooting this would be much appreciated.
