I think the 'strict adherence' is the problem. I don't understand the issue well enough to say whether or not this is a bug but, on a copy of the databse, try adjusting this property back to 'traditional' (see:dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/server-sql-mode.html) and then try your INSERT statement. I guess this will at least help to isolate the problem if not exactly solve it.
