as for why, to satisfy a lecturer who probably hasn't thought through his questions properly.
your locate solution is clearly the most sensible, however, we technically haven't learnt it yet and his question sheet says "you will need the || operator, which is concatenation of strings.." even though he has told us to use MySQL to produce solutions.
