Perhaps the problem is a clue of worse problems. Do you understand the pain you will go through if this data is lost? If your laptop is stolen? Storing SSNs without rigorous protections is a no-no these days. If the data is compromised, you will have to send letters to all the Authors explaining what happened. In some cases you may be required to pay for identity-theft protection for all of them. Not fun. Not cheap.
