MySQL using 80-90% of CPU

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 4GB RAM running RHEL 5.2 and mysql-5.0.45-7.el5 cacti shows that CPU utilization is always around 80-90% and the load is always about 1. top confirms that it's MySQL that is using all those cycles. I know next to nothing about MySQL, or SQL in general, but I have a very, very difficult time believing that the use we're putting it to should be grinding up this much computing power.

How could I get some more information to determine why this machine is thinking so hard and, hopefully, start to figure out how to tune it?
