I am getting the same issue. I can connect to my remote mysql server from the machine using GUI tools (Query Browser...) and command line.

However when I use mysql workbench with exact same connection settings, it ends up with the above error message. Does anyone know what is the error #4 ? Doesn't seem to be a mysql server error.

Also, note that if I create an SSH tunnel to the db server, and configure mysql workbench to use it, it can connect fine.

I'm using latest Mac OS X Snow Leopard on the client side, and latest Ubuntu server side.
