The InnoDB params are in .ini file 'cause I've tried it too, whether this engine faster or not. In my case - negative.
I'll increase the 'key_buffer_size' to 300 M.
I could not guess right what are the [ code ]..[ /code ] tags for, so I've copied them directly from your post. I thought this are the marks for the bot on the site.
The idea to use pre-summarized data for last monthes has crossed my mind too, maybe this is the way to go.
I beg my pardon for the database, it's of our customer and we are not allowed to change it. I'm responsible only for the query tool we've deployed there. This is my first MySql experience.
