Chris,

For the moment, recursive stored procedures will work fine. However, with the upcoming version of MYSQL 5, they will not work, or at least that is my understanding from reading the BK commits of the last week or so. I believe one of the developers (dlenev?) has disabled recursion due to associated bugs... You may want to check the commits on this one.

Also, Erin did mention they couldn't upgrade to 5 right yet...

As you certainly are, I am hoping recursion makes its way back into the builds soon. :)
