Since you're new to relational databases and starting with MySQL -- you're lucky there are some good books out there. The one I like for conceptual ideas (and I am SURE there are more -- I just happen to have it sitting next to me and it's good for beginners AND intermed. database people ) is called:
Beginning MySQL database Design and optimization from Novice to Professional. By Jon Stephens & Chad Russell. ISBN:1-59059-332-4

I'm not sure I'd start where they started the book if I was a beginner. I highly recommend that you start in chap. 3 on normalization, go back to chap 1 and read right thru (re-reading chap. 3) to the end. There are other books that are better resources as a reference for MySQL but this one will help you with concepts and optimization which means your code should start off clean ! :)
