such an IF works only in a stored procedure or function, not as a single, orphan statement.
You have some IF EXISTS syntax that does work outside procedures, but that is used as part of DDL statements to check the existence of databases, tables, not for executing arbitrary code.
What is the something you want to do, maybe you can encode it in a where clause?
