Thanks, what I did before you replied was to split the query into 2 (where one outer join with subselect) or 4 ( where two outer join with subselect) in the application. It will be interesting to see the difference in overall perfomance between your approach and mine. All my queries run in sequence to produce a message file. This was taking about 14 minutes on a dual x86 1.8Ghz box with RAID0 IDE, still too slow.
I am flat out against a deadline so will have to delay reporting any bug until after I am finished. I understand a I need to build a test case to report.
