update to 4.1 or try to set the character set in my.cnf (my.ini on windows)
you need to enter this:
[mysqld]
default-character-set=XXXX
instead of XXXX use the character set you want. on my system i could use those:
latin1 big5 czech euc_kr gb2312 gbk latin1_de sjis tis620 ujis dec8 dos german1 hp8 koi8_ru latin2 swe7 usa7 cp1251 danish hebrew win1251 estonia hungarian koi8_ukr win1251ukr greek win1250 croat cp1257 latin5
works on my mysql here (4.0.20). i dodnt find any other solution but maybe there is a better way. best thing yould be to upgrade to 4.1 i think.
