Can't connect to ODBC

I am configuring access to MySQL via ODBC and during the test data source I got an error saying "Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; considering upgrading mySQL client". I am running 4.1.7, Wins XP and I can connect to mySQL command line client using userid root. So what should I upgrade? Is there something call mySQL client on mysql.com? Thanks!
