automatically putting current date when inserting records

Hi guys and gals,

Im creating a table into which an admin will insert records. This table will have a date field. What i want is whenever a record is inserted this table, the date field is automatically populated with the current date. How would this be done? Thanks in advance for your help..much appreciated
