Importing Strings

First, I apologize if this topic is already covered in one of the forums. I was unable to locate the thread.

Is it possible to define our own string delimiters such that we can avoid having to 'escape' characters like single and double quotes, with "\"?

Also, can anyone recommend a character set that will recognize the "..." (ellipsis) character, as well as single and double, opening and closing quotes? Initial data entry was done using MS Word, and some people had "Auto-correct" enabled,while others did not.
