Did you by any chance use the wizard to install MySQL? If you did you probably chose the option where the root user can only logon locally (which is the smart thing to do)

If I'm not mistaken that also means that the entry root@% is never put in the user table and that's the reason you get this error message.

You only need the % entries if you want to be able to connect to the database from any client without having to know in which domain that client resides beforehand. If you do know the domain you could enter something like 'uname@mydomain.com' instead of '%'

Like I said, I could be wrong, but this seems the logical reason to me. Maybe one of the MySQL people would care to comment?
