That looks great. Just one more thing. That performance problems you talk about, what is their origin?
a>overhead with compound UNIQUE NOT NULL candidate key uniqueness enforcement (e.g. with each INSERT operation it has to check all the attributes of the key for uniqueness)
b>overhead with foreign key constraints
