The path is specified in the this registry key (on my XP box anyway):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MySql
You could try removing this key from the registry and then run the MySQL setup again.
Be carefull editing your registry though. If you mess up you might have to reinstall the entire OS so always make a backup of your registry first.
