As a followup ...
The old drive that fails to boot had mysql 4.1 installed.
I have slaved that drive to another PC (with mysql 4.1.12 loaded) and have
saved other data and I am able to access its MYSQL folder ...

When I copy the data folder into corresponding directorys on new drive I get errors like when I try to access tables:

#1017 - Can't find file: 'master_name.MYI' (errno: 2)

... I look for corresponding .MYI / .MYD files but cant find any on the old drive.

I have also tried Repair table with USE_FRM but get a repair error.

eg. REPAIR TABLE address USE_FRM
addressbook.address repair error Can't find file: 'address.MYI' (errno: 2)

.... looks like I am cooked .. appreciate any help from the wiseheads on this forum ?
