MySql starting

I´m trying to start mysql, but I don´t know how. I´ve installed version 4 on my computer. But there are no threads in the start menu of windows xp. What I have to do now? Do I need an Apache Server or so, where I can simulate my scripts? How can I connect me with the server? I have already built up a database on a server. But how can I access to it?
I hope anybody of you can help me. I´m sure ...
