Comparing Dates?

Hi,

I have a list of events stored in a database and I'd like to select rows from the database depending on their date, for example events where the date is after today. I have given each row a date column (date_short eg 2005-08-01 for 1st August), how do I select all from a table where date is after today (in numerical terms, greater than today's date 2005-08-21).
