Thanks Rick for a fantastic answer - makes sense, and I will follow your advise.

Using plan A currently and good for another year but based on this I will head towards plan C.

Using prepared statements as much as possible through php pdo to reduce/eliminate risk of injection (as long as this works then should be ok).

Currently user access via grants.
