Moving Mysql to a new server

Im a newbie to this. I host some bb boards and gallerys. I host everything on my own server at home. Everything is on a hyper-v 2003 server. It needs to be rebuilt. It keeps crashing and mysql will take forever to load back up. I dont know why......
but anyway, in the meantime im thinking of building a new vm with server 2008 just for mysql. Can I just install the newest mysql and "restore" all the databases on the new server? What else is involved? Would I need to upgrade the "live" sql server to the newest edition? I forget, but im like 5.0.4 or something.
Thanks.
