Import error solved, but one question

Hello,
I spent this weekend putting together my first database, after I was done I did an export and kind of expected the export to be all that's needed in a recovery. However, I decided to try it after dropping the database from the system and got error 1046 instead (no database selected). I reasoned that I should create the database first, then import - it worked. I guess my question is; is this how it should work? My impression is that an import should create the database for me automatically - of course, I guess it's in the name "import", nothing new being created, right?
