Result pane doesn't match text output for international characters

I am running this query in an attempt to troubleshoot an issue displaying international characters:

select _ucs2 0x30da

I get an empty box character displayed within the result pane, but when I go to 'Plugins-->Utilities-->Execute Query Into Text Output', the text output pane shows exactly what I would expect (ペ).

I've poked around quite a bit on the forums, and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. All of my fonts within 'Edit-->Preferences--> Appearance' are set to Arial Unicode MS.
