password expired

I get a message that my password has expired when I try to use my program using mysql. I didn't know that the mysql password needed to be reset. I've been googling the issue and the information provided is way more confusing than it needs to be. Can you please tell me how to reset the password?

Also can it be set such that it never has to be reset?
