MySQL Workbench connections hostname?

I am trying to access my server on my home computer. (I made a small java application that uses JDBC). I can connect using localhost on my home computer - and when I change "hostname" in connections to the computer ip address - I can connect from inside my own wifi (LAN).
But when I connect from elsewhere I get a "communications link failure". I have entered my router settings and put it on "lowest security" - while also turning off the firewall on the computer. It still do not work. It did not work to connect from school, nor when I connect to my iphone and use it as a router with my laptop. (But as soon as I connect to my home wifi - it works again).
I think I have to change "hostname" in connections "Manage server connections" in MySQL workbench" - but to what?
