First, thank you for the quick reply.

Second, both boxes are on the LAN. David is the name of the of the PC when I look at the system screen. I did change the host name to the IP address of the Linux box and now I am getting a different message:

"Host 'david.home' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server"

Also, I updated the user table on MySQL to change the host name to david.home for user david.
