Sure, the surrent timestamp must be a func, and MySQL has made that available as a default value, but they've not done so either for built-in funcs in general, or for user-defined funcs. Why? My guess is it involves a great deal more integrity checking than has so far been coded in.

It's a user-supported open-source product. The only way to make general support for default funcs a high priority is to make the feature request on the bugs page.
