Re: Finally, a hint

Thanks, Peter and Barry.

It really is a bit of a mystery. No errors. Just "failed".

I was misled by output from other tools. Like /var/run/mysql being empty. Of course it's empty, doofus. The server isn't running.

But meanwhile, I'm also almost convinced it isn't a permissions problem. On a test server, with all permissions granted, the result is exactly the same. That's the most annoying: even trying to mess up to generate some meaningful error, it stubbornly produces the exact same result.

Unless, of course, MySQL has a mechanism that prevents starting with open permissions. But I doubt that, because of the number of "I've solved it!" comments after chmod 0777.

And the test server doesn't "stick" with the problem. It launches without any problem when I restore it's previous data. I even tried to pull the rug from under it, by deleting it's data while it was running. But even that doesn't do the trick...

That leads me to a feeling that I must be overlooking something. But I still have no clue at all.
