With the data files from the unwilling server, yes. These get created, but are empty. Which leads me to the supposition the mysql daemon hangs early in the startup process.

I repeated the experiment with another existing mysql server. Moved data and my.cnf from the unwilling server in place and got the same result.

BUT:

When I moved the original data files and my.conf back, it worked as it should. And that's what made the unwilling server fail. So my test server doesn't fail, for some unknown reason. No solution, but it shows the problem to be with the data files.

Could rsync have caused this, I wonder?
