Thank you, Peter! I did finally reset the root password.
Unfortunately, when re-installing MySQL, the Configuration Wizard was again unable to upgrade the database tables due to error 1045: access denied to user root at localhost. As you pointed out earlier, it said it wasn't using the root password.
I also tried running mysql_upgrade from the command line. That also failed due to error 1045.
What might be causing the denial of access?
