Can't access mysql as root!

Hello;

I have a cloud server 5.7.22-0ubuntu0.16.04.1, just noticed last night that I can't access mysql by using this command:

>> mysql -u root -p

I got this asnwer:
mysql: [ERROR] unknown variable 'performance_schema=0'

any idea how to solve this?
