Sorry, I should have mentioned that I was only chucking those numbers (and the field format) in as arbitrary. Point I was trying to make was excluding rows that have all values of '0'.

I think you've hit the nail on the head! I can assure you that the table in fact hasn't been designed properly. Maybe I need to take a step back and post a design query in another group.

I am very much a newbie to this and I'm going to explore your comment around "decimal(3,1), field varchar(1) ) where the field column encodes the info buried in your field1...5 columns". Thank you for that suggestion and I think I need to start over again.
