Thanks Peter for the dash of sanity. But would you please clarify - does one need Linux root privileges to change the MySQL root user's password, i.e. the one that one would enter at the prompt from a "mysql -u root -p" command? Or do they only need to know the MySQL database root user's password? I did give the vendor the latter password, but not the Linux root user password.
