What is the best way to get sets of results

I want the results of my query in sets of a determined length.

For example, assume that I have a query for one field that results in one letter. Than the first three returned rows should look something like "a,b,c", "d,e,f" and "g,h,i".

Is such a thing possible with a query? If not, what is the best way to get this?
