The general query logs (un)successful logins.
But there's another POV that only DBAs should have access to direct login. On this view, you would remove the client program mysql from global access and in its place provide a frontend which, inter alia, logs all connection requests. An advantage of this approach over the general query log is that it imposes no performance penalty.
