Last version to accept empty stings in DATE fields?

I need to migrate a bunch of legacy code to a new hosting environment, and need to know the last version of MySQL Server that accepted empty strings into DATE fields, i.e. INSERT INTO table (date_field) VALUES ('').
Can anyone help?
