I had a look at my Windows services (services.msc). Result: mysql is not loaded. (Strange that Xampp says otherwise). It was not even present in the services list.
So I ran "mysqld --install". After that Mysql appeared in the services list. However, when I tried to start it there I got error 1067 - the process was unexpectedly ended. Nothing was added in the Mysql error log.
I tried "mysqld --initialize" on the command line. It gave no error. But it had no result either.
