MYSQLDump

I am using Mysql server 5.7.1. I cannot get the mysqldump to work, I always get a syntax error.
I login to the shell and as the root user.
Here is what I use for the dump mysqldump database_name > dump.sql;
I get ERROR 1064 <42000> You have a error in your Syntax.
Can anyone tell what is wrong? Is there a default or config that I missed?
