mysql prompt suddenly changed

Hello,
My apologies if this question has already been answered. I'm running Mysql 8.0.18 in Ubuntu 19.10 and logged into the server with the root account. I've created a database 'cds' and added columns to it. Using the INSERT INTO query, I added five rows of data. Then, after entering the INSERT INTO query to add data into a new row, the row is not added but instead of throwing an error, the command prompt changes to '> instead of the usual mysql. If it helps, I am using the keyboard arrow to bring back the previous query and then modifying that data before executing the query. Any ideas what's going here? Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Steve
